ABOUT

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my website. From an early age, creativity has been at the heart of my life whether through painting, drawing, design, or making.

After studying at Kingston School of Art & Design, I built a successful international career designing for brands including Mulberry, Daniel Hechter, Daylesford/Bamford, and Boden, alongside a wide range of freelance projects. For twelve years I also ran two award-winning clothing and lifestyle stores, before returning in 2014 to dedicate more time to my art practice.

Today, I divide my time between the landscapes of the Malvern Hills and the coastlines of West Wales and West Cornwall, painting and sketching along coastal paths and beaches. Visits to my family in Northumberland also provide rich inspiration, with its vast skies and dramatic, castle-studded coastline.

My practice is rooted in drawing and shaped by an exploratory approach to materials. I work across oils, inks, pastels, and charcoal, often combining them in a single piece, with charcoal remaining a constant favourite. My style ranges from representational to impressionistic, and at times leans into abstraction, depending on subject and mood. Life drawing continues to be a vital discipline, keeping my work fresh and responsive.

While much of my focus is on landscape and seascape, I also enjoy portraiture and still life, believing that exploring new subjects sharpens observation and strengthens the eye.

Since 2024, I have co-run Worcestershire Open Studios Art Week on a voluntary basis, supporting artists and makers and encouraging the wider public to enjoy the nefits of engaging with art. I exhibit under my maiden name, Gemma Griffiths, which has always been my professional identity, though some works may also appear under my married name, Gemma Wiseman.

Thank you for visiting my website,

Gemma
